Fiat money is government-issued currency that is not backed by a physical commodity, such as gold or silver, but rather by the government that issued it. Most modern paper currencies are fiat currencies, including the U.S. dollar, the euro and other major global currencies.

An import is a good or service bought in one country that was produced in another. Imports and exports are the components of international trade. If the value of a country’s imports exceeds the value of its exports, the country has a negative balance of trade (BOT), also known as a trade deficit.

Means to develop an invention, innovation or technology into a saleable product and sell it to make a profit.

Refers to patient equity capital invested in venture companies. Typically, when a venture commences, it beings to spend cash on developing the concept, researching the market, building prototypes, securing patents and other intellectual property and developing its business plan. This process is represented by the “J” curve as it falls from left to right through the seed and early stages. The venture company aims to commercialise the invention and make sales. This point of first commercial sales is a critical step in the innovation process and is represented by the very bottom of the “J” curve, after which, sales are made and revenue is earned.

Is invested in researching the venture and the market, securing the intellectual property, and building and testing prototypes.

Is directly invested in the process of manufacturing the commercial product for sale and getting ready to sell it.

Is invested to increase existing production or sales. Revenue is already being earned, but more capital is needed to expand output and sales. At this point, a small amount of extra capital can produce greatly expanded sales and profits in the short term, and these should be reflected in increases in the share price

Over time, as money is spent and progress is made, risks should be managed and reduced, so that in a venture that is progressing successfully, the share price should normally increase as the point of first commercial sales is reached and passed.

Investments made in the later stages of startup and expansion tend to be less risky than those made in the very early stages of a venture, as by then, many  of the risks have been managed or eliminated.

Refers to an unlisted private or public company which issues new shares to investors and then uses the funds raised to buy shares in a portfolio of venture companies.

Refers to medium term investment in venture companies on which the investor would not expect a return for approximately 3 years.

Refers to under three years, “medium term” investing is 4-7 years
